SGT220 - Surgical Technology Externship - 8 Credits

Surgical Technology Credit Course College

Prepares students to enter the workforce as Surgical Technologists. Under direct supervision in the hospital or surgery center setting, students complete 120 cases for certification. Students build upon the skills previously learned in lectures and labs. This externship allows students to show expertise in applying sterile techniques and how to appropriately identify and fix breaks in sterility. During the externship, students maximize patient safety while fine-tuning skills to efficiently organize the operating room and set up for specific cases. Students demonstrate knowledge of critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they apply them to individual procedures. Students also demonstrate expertise in dressing preparation, application, and proper handling of specimens. Students perform the first scrub and second scrub roles to complete their case requirements.
Special Requirements: Students must arrange for transportation to and from their clinical site. Required health documentation, release of information, and other attestation forms as required by the clinical site must be submitted by the deadline listed on the course syllabus.
Prereq: SGT 201, SGT 210; concurrent enrollment in SGT 221 and concurrent enrollment in SGT 223; SGT majors only
